An unusual cold snap asks a Bay Area homeowner to look at the home as a set of separate systems. A refrigerator has its own food and water concerns. A washer has hoses, valves, and a drain. Heating equipment has controls, moving parts, electricity, and sometimes combustion. A single weather headline does not tell you what any one appliance needs.

Start with the home’s actual conditions
Look at the parts of the property that are exposed to outside air, wind, shade, or an unheated garage. Note the location of water lines, hose bibs, appliance connections, filters, exterior HVAC equipment, and access panels. A line inside a conditioned room may face a different condition from a line in a crawl space or cabinet.
Do not assume that a cold morning affected every room equally. Record the date, the weather condition as observed, and the first visible change. A wet cabinet, a refrigerator alarm, a washer that will not fill, or a heating system that starts differently is more useful than a guess about what the weather “must have” done.
If the home is rented, managed, or part of a shared building, follow the property procedure before moving equipment or closing a shared water valve. Keep the notice, access instructions, and any maintenance direction together.
Protect the refrigerator and its water path
Check the refrigerator’s visible water connection, filter area, dispenser area, and nearby floor or cabinet for a new leak. Look at the door seals and the temperature or alarm display using the normal operator controls. Do not pull a built-in refrigerator forward, remove a rear cover, or disconnect a water line to inspect it.
If the refrigerator is in a garage or another space with a different condition from the living area, record that location. A warm cabinet, a weak dispenser, a change in ice production, or a water mark can have several causes. The weather may be part of the sequence, but it does not identify a valve, filter, control, or sealed-system problem.
Keep food decisions separate from equipment diagnosis. Use the household’s food-safety plan and the appliance instructions if an alarm or temperature change appears. Do not rely on the smell or appearance of food as the only test.
Review washer hoses and drains
Look at accessible washer hoses, shutoffs, the floor pan if one is installed, and the visible drain area. Note a drip, bulge, crack, displaced hose, standing water, or change in the washer’s fill or drain behavior. Do not tighten a connection with force, pull the machine out alone, or open the cabinet.
If a washer is in a garage, utility room, or exterior-access area, keep the path safe and dry. Water near an outlet or a power strip is a stop condition. Use the normal control to stop the appliance when safe, keep people away from the wet area, and follow the property or emergency procedure.
A washer that will not fill can have a supply condition, a control condition, a valve issue, or another cause. A frozen or restricted line is only one possibility. Record what the machine does and does not do instead of naming a failed part.
Check HVAC controls and equipment area
Use the normal thermostat controls and record the selected mode, set point, display message, and what happens during one ordinary call for heat. Look at an accessible filter only if the equipment instructions or property agreement assign that task. Note weak airflow, a new sound, a water mark, a power interruption, or a system that starts and stops differently.
For an outdoor heat pump or air conditioner, observe from a safe distance. Keep snow, leaves, stored items, and people away from moving equipment without touching the fan, coil, wiring, disconnect, or service cover. Do not scrape ice, pour hot water on the equipment, add refrigerant, or reset a tripped breaker repeatedly.
Gas odor, smoke, sparking, a burning smell, exposed wiring, water near power, or a safety alarm requires people and pets to stay clear and the applicable emergency procedure to take priority. Do not open a furnace cabinet or adjust combustion controls.
Use a simple event record
For each affected appliance, write the model if it is safely visible, the location, the last known normal operation, the first changed behavior, the visible condition, the controls used, and the result. Add a safe photo when it helps show a leak, display message, door gap, or hose condition. Do not photograph private information or open equipment to obtain a label.
Keep separate notes for the refrigerator, washer, water path, and HVAC system. One successful cycle does not erase a leak or alarm. If a normal control reset changes the symptom, record the exact action and time. Do not repeat resets just to make a system run.
Know when the checklist stops
Homeowners can record visible conditions and use normal controls covered by the manual. Gas, combustion, live electrical, high voltage, refrigerant, sealed-system, pressurized water, internal drain, panel, and moving-part work belongs with the appropriate qualified person. A cold snap may reveal a weak connection or a pre-existing issue, but a weather event is not a diagnosis.
The useful result is a clean handoff: what changed, where it happened, what was safely observed, what was not touched, and which instruction or property procedure applies next. That record helps the next person work from the home as it is, rather than from an invented threshold or a guessed part.
