What mode was selected? What set point, fan setting, schedule, hold, and display message were present before the test? Was the thermostat calling for cooling, or was the fan simply moving air? Write the answers down before changing several controls together.
Did the indoor fan start? Did the outdoor unit start? Did both continue, stop, or cycle in a way that was different from the last known normal operation? A thermostat request is one observation. It does not prove that the indoor control, outdoor unit, sealed system, or distribution path completed its work.
If the thermostat uses a schedule or a building control, save the original setting. Make only the normal adjustment allowed by the manual or property procedure, then record the result. Do not remove the thermostat from the wall or trace wires.
Questions about airflow
Is airflow present at every accessible register? Is it weak throughout the home, weak in one room, or normal in most rooms? Are return grilles covered by furniture, rugs, or stored items? Is an accessible filter displaced, loaded, or recently changed under the equipment instructions?
Compare rooms without turning the comparison into a duct diagnosis. One warm room can relate to distribution, a damper, a sensor, insulation, a door, or equipment operation. A weak stream can relate to the filter, return path, blower, duct, coil, or control. Only testing can separate those possibilities.
Do not remove a grille, open an air handler, clean an internal coil, or install a filter that does not match the equipment instructions. Record what can be seen from the room side and leave internal access closed.

Use the home’s normal monitoring method if one exists. Do not invent a universal temperature difference or decide that a warm day proves a capacity problem. A weather condition can reveal a system under higher demand without naming a part or establishing that the equipment was sized incorrectly.
If ice is visible, note its location and use the normal control to stop cooling when safe. Do not chip ice, pour water on a coil, add refrigerant, or keep restarting the system to see if it clears.
Questions about water
Is there a new water mark below the indoor unit, near a drain path, or around an exterior discharge? Did the water appear during the cooling test, after the system stopped, or at another time? Was the area already wet before the test?
Keep water away from electrical equipment and follow the home’s safety procedure. Do not pour chemicals into a drain, bypass a float switch, remove a pan, or open a panel to find the source. A visible drip can come from more than one path, and a dry floor does not prove that drainage is correct.
Record the location, time, and equipment state. If the water is near power, if a breaker trips, or if the equipment shows smoke, burning, sparking, or damaged wiring, stop the test and keep people clear.
Questions about noise and outdoor response
What was the sound, where did it come from, and when did it start? Was it a hum, rattle, scraping sound, vibration, click, or change in airflow? Did the sound occur at startup, during operation, or while the system stopped?
Observe the outdoor unit from a safe distance. Do not touch the fan, coil, wiring, disconnect, or service cover. A fan that runs does not identify the condition of the sealed system. A quiet unit does not prove a thermostat fault. Keep the record descriptive.
Put the answers into a handoff
Include the model if it is safely visible, thermostat state, room pattern, airflow, filter observation, outdoor response, water, ice, sound, power events, recent work, and the last known normal operation. Add the exact display message and times. Say what was not attempted.
For a rental or shared building, add access restrictions and the correct maintenance channel. For a homeowner, keep the manual and earlier service notes with the new record. A later successful cooling cycle should be added to the history, not used to erase the first symptom.
Keep the boundary clear
A spring startup question list can improve communication. It cannot measure refrigerant, verify a compressor, test a capacitor, confirm airflow inside a duct, or approve an electrical repair. Those tasks belong to the appropriate qualified person and current equipment instructions.
The best first test ends with specific questions and honest unknowns. That is enough to distinguish a thermostat observation from an airflow observation, a water event from a cooling complaint, and a new sound from a guessed part.
