Electrician for EV Charging in Danville or San Ramon: What to Ask Before You Sign

A homeowner's checklist for choosing an electrician, checking the panel, planning permits, and comparing a Level 2 EV charger quote.

The charger is only one part of the project

Buying a wall charger does not tell you whether the house can support it. The installation also involves the electrical service, panel capacity, circuit protection, conductors, conduit, receptacle or hard-wired connection, location, weather exposure, and local inspection.

In Danville and San Ramon, start by describing the complete project. Tell the electrician the vehicle, the charger model if you have chosen one, where the car is parked, and how far that location is from the electrical panel. Include photos of the panel, meter area, garage, driveway, attic, crawlspace, and any finished walls the wiring may cross.

The goal is a quote based on the actual route and electrical load, not a price based on a stock photo of a charger.

Ask for the right California license

The California Contractors State License Board lists C-10 Electrical Contractor as the classification for installing and connecting electrical wires, fixtures, appliances, apparatus, raceways, and conduits that use electrical energy. Ask who will perform the electrical connection, who pulls the permit, and who will be present for inspection. If a company uses a subcontractor, the contract should make that relationship clear.

The first technical question: Level 1 or Level 2?

Level 1 charging uses a standard household outlet. Level 2 charging uses a higher-capacity circuit and is usually installed as a dedicated circuit with either a listed receptacle or a hard-wired EVSE. The right choice depends on driving needs, the vehicle, the parking location, the existing service, and the time available for charging.

Do not choose a Level 2 unit only because it is faster on paper. The vehicle has its own charging limit. The electrician should explain the expected result in plain language and identify which part of the system sets that limit.

Ask these questions:

  • Is the charger listed for the intended installation and compatible with the vehicle?
  • Will it be plug-in or hard-wired, and why?
  • What circuit protection and disconnecting means are required?
  • Is the location exposed to weather, impact, water, or vehicle movement?
  • Does the manufacturer require a specific mounting height, clearance, or cable path?
  • Who will connect the charger to Wi-Fi or the network, and is that separate from the electrical commissioning?

The answer should refer to the charger instructions and the applicable electrical code, not only to what the installer has done on another house.

Ask for a load calculation

The panel may have physical space for a breaker and still lack capacity for the added continuous load. A proper evaluation looks at the service rating, existing circuits, heating and cooling equipment, water heating, cooking equipment, solar or storage, and the proposed EVSE.

Ask for the load calculation or at least a written explanation of the result. If the panel needs an upgrade, ask what changes: the main service, meter equipment, panel, feeder, subpanel, conductors, utility coordination, or all of them. A panel upgrade is not automatically required, and it should not be proposed without showing why.

If the installer suggests a load-management device instead of a service upgrade, ask how it works, what loads it controls, what happens during a fault, and whether it is approved for the charger and the home. A lower-cost design is useful only if it is code-compliant and compatible with the equipment.

If the charger is owner-supplied, ask who is responsible for missing parts, compatibility, warranty claims, and a defective unit discovered during commissioning. A quote that says “install customer charger” leaves too much open.

Ask whether the range includes the charger itself, permit, inspection, patching, and final testing. Compare quotes using the same charger model and route. One contractor may include a load calculation and permit while another gives only labor for mounting the box.

Be cautious with a price that is dramatically lower but excludes the permit, uses an unspecified breaker or wire, or assumes a spare breaker is safe without checking the load. The cheapest number is not a useful comparison if it leaves the safety work for later.

Red flags before signing

  • The installer will not provide a verifiable California license.
  • The quote says to use any spare breaker without a load evaluation.
  • No one explains plug-in versus hard-wired connection.
  • The permit is described as optional without checking the local authority.
  • The quote omits conductor route, protection, equipment model, or inspection.
  • The installer promises a charging speed without asking about the vehicle and charger.
  • A panel upgrade is recommended without a written reason.
  • The company asks you to sign before showing the scope and exclusions.

Ask for corrections in writing. Save the quote, permit documents, inspection result, equipment manual, and commissioning notes with the vehicle records.
